| Abraham Carter Comments: Written by his grandson, John Stott Abraham Carter, I believe was born in Boston Lincolnshire, His father has far as I can gather was groom to a gentleman and I believe that he drove the gentleman where ever he wanted taking in a Hackney carriage drawn by two Hackney horses. My grandfather eventually met and married my Grandmother (nee Fanny Bullamoor), they must have then moved to Bradford because his children went to school in the Bradford Road Area, and he had a job working as a steward for the Conservative club in Bradford. I believe he held this post for quite a few years. I understand that when his family were young they lived in Harewood Street of off Barkerend Road, Bradford Moor, Bradford
My grandfather also at some time in his life was the manager of the Adelphi Hotel in Harrogate, and he & grandma Lived in the Regent Grove area, They must have been quite well off in those days, because Grandma had a governess Cart of her own this being a small buggy like trap drawn by a pony. A few years before he retired my Grandfather became the Landlord of the Tenant Arms Hotel at Kilnsey in Wharfedale, in about 1920.
After a few years there the business suffered from a few wet seasons, and sadly my grandfather had to go into Liquidation, He and my grandmother along with their Oldest daughter moved into a charming small cottage in Appletreewick, Which was about Seven miles down the Dale. This is about the time I really got to know my Grand father as I spent a holiday with Grandma and Granddad in the year before the Second World war broke out 1938, when I was nine
Grandad Carter was a fine man, carried himself with an air of authority, he was always dressed smartly, had a waxed moustache, and always walked with a very posh walking stick
. He and his Family were well respected, he must have been well loved by family too because they always talked of him with much affection
(What better thing can a Man leave behind, than a good reputation?)
