My mother was born in Bradford at Harewood Street, off Barkerend Road, Bradford. Her maiden name was Florence May Carter. She was the youngest child of a family of six children (two boys and four girls),. The family were brought up in a very strict Environment although in a very kindly way. My mother was a very fashion conscious person and even though she met some very hard times financially, she was always dressed in the latest fashion in clothes that she had made and designed her self. Mother was a slender although very strong mentally and physically, She had the ability to live one day at a time. I believe she went to a school called Le-Page Street School off Barker End Road, She spent her teen-age years working for a family of Jews in the clothing trade, here she became a machinist, eventually becoming the head machinist. After leaving Bradford she lived for a short while with her parents in Harrogate where her father was the manager of the Adelphia hotel, After this period, at the age of twenty in 1921 she moved with her parents to the Tenant Arms Hotel Kilnsey where her father became the Landlord. In 1925 my mother married my father. They were married at Coniston Church, which was in the next village to Kilnsey, In those days there wasn't any time for a honey moon, she moved in with my fathers family (according to her this was one of the biggest mistakes she could have made, the extended family being no good). In the next few years she first of all gave birth to my sister Marjorie, then she had a miss-carriage I was born in 1929 at Bank Top Farm Eccleshill Bradford. In 1945 her And my father moved to Hill top Farm, Birkenshaw, after four years there she moved to Dudley hill, my father having retired from farming and bought a milk round. When my father died at the age of 61, and after a few years my mother married a chap named Ernest Wilson, Then she was widowed again and came to live with Betty and I in Harrogate, after a short while she married again to Leonard Johnson, He Died when she was in her Eighty's, after a while she moved in to a Warden controlled flat at Hanover House, Tewitt Well Avenue, Harrogate. Mother was very happy at Hanover House, From where she died at a good age of 99. Mother spent her life in the service to others. And she was a very good mother and friend. |
